Super markets are relatively new in India taking into account that newyork had its first super market in August 4, 1930 to be precise. Though new there are several studies and criticism that these business houses are going through. There are these agitations against super markets and the social change disaster it could possibly bring. Then again there are people who believe that it will eat the small retailers. What ever the criticism be, supermarkets have always survived, grown and prospered in our land. The way super markets change the social structure is astonishing.

Being relatively new, studying supermarket in context with Indian society will be little difficult. One of the best place to see the relation between supermarket and society will be America. The supermarkets have helped America endure the Great Depression, it has created the middle class, ended the Cold War and  caused the launch of new technologies that forever changed the way the world does business.

Super markets is infact is a great economic engine that can bring great social change. The Americans during the cold war has used this as a weapon. The supermarket was promoted as a metaphor for what capitalism is capable of doing and Communism is not, especially as the people around globe recognized the benefits of a free-market system. The Soviet Union at this stage were very much able to compete with the U.S. in space flight and military hardware, but it could not deliver the standard of living that the supermarket made possible.

Many of the criticism that are raised against super markets controlled my the corporate profit making machines are legitimate but super markets will exist as the middle class gains from it, super markets fits their pocket.  The only possible solutions to the problems that the super market create will be creative and well planned intervention of the policy makers. Only through this the evils supermarket cause be eradicated and the role of super markets in uplifting the standard of living be promoted.
